Storyline:
With Maaran, Karthick Naren’s quest to reclaim the touch that marked his sparkling debut Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru continues. While the young filmmaker’s sophomore effort Naragasooran is still waiting to see the light of the day (for no fault of his), the follow-up Mafia: Chapter 1 was flashy but ultimately underwhelming. He showed signs of rediscovering his form with Project Agni, the mindbending short that was part of the anthology Navarasa. And Maaran is his weakest effort yet, one in which even his filmmaking style doesn’t come to his help. And the writing is even more of a letdown.
The story is centred around Mathimaaran (Dhanush, in a rare dispassionate performance), a crime reporter who insists on speaking truth to power, following in the footsteps of his father Sathyamoorthy (Ramki), who lost his life after making an exposé. He is fearless to a fault, and is concerned only about telling the truth. With help from his cop friend Arjun (KK, effective), he brings to light a scam, involving fake EVMs, being planned by former minister Pazhani (Samuthirakani, trying to make the most out of a red herring of a role), who is trying to reclaim his past glory. But what Maaran seems to have forgotten about is the safety of his sister Shwetha (Smruthi Venkat, the only performance that shows warmth)
